What are the signs of male infertility, and when should I get tested?

In general, fertility testing is recommended when pregnancy has not occurred after one year of regular, unprotected intercourse. If a female partner is over the age of 35, evaluation is typically recommended after six months.

What is a semen analysis, and why does it matter?

The test examines several key aspects of sperm, including: 

  • sperm count  (how many sperm are present in the sample)
  • motility (how effectively sperm are able to swim)

  • semen volume (the total amount of fluid produced during ejaculation)

These parameters are then measured against reference ranges established by the World Health Organization (WHO) to assess whether sperm health falls within normal limits.

Medical History and Physical Examination

Before any lab work, your provider will conduct a thorough review of your medical history to gain additional context that may help inform your evaluation plan. During this discussion, your provider may ask about prior surgeries, medications, chronic health conditions, injuries, infections, and lifestyle habits. 

After reviewing your medical history, your provider will also conduct a physical examination to check for any anatomical concerns that may be impacting your fertility, such as varicoceles. 

Hormone Testing

Male Fertility Testing FAQ

  • A semen analysis is a laboratory evaluation that measures the quantity and quality of sperm in a semen sample.
