  Patient Instructions for Semen Analysis

The following are instructions for Main Line Fertility patients only, regarding the collection of a semen specimen. If you have any questions concerning the collection for your semen analysis, please contact the office.

As with all visits and procedures, be sure you have obtained the appropriate referral/authorization from your insurance company prior to coming to the office.

1. Refrain from all forms of ejaculation (intercourse and masturbation) for at least two days before the test.
2. Produce the semen specimen by masturbating into either the cup provided by the doctor or a scrupulously clean glass jar. Be sure there is nothing in the jar other than semen (no lubricants, etc.).
3. Do your best to collect all of the fluid. If you miss some semen, be sure to let the doctor know.
4. Label the specimen container with your name, the date, and the time you produced the sample. If the jar is not labeled, it may not be accepted.
5. The specimen should be received within one hour from the time it is produced. If you live too far away we will provide a quiet private room. During transport keep the semen between room temperature and body temperature. In the winter, this is best accomplished by holding the specimen jar in an inside pocket. Be sure to keep the lid on tight and hold the jar upright.
6. The complete results will usually be available by the following day. Often you will be able to look through the microscope at the sperm when you drop off the specimen.
