Unless otherwise instructed, the male should be abstinent (not ejaculate) for at least two days prior to the post coital test. The couple should have intercourse in their usual fashion 24 to 6 hours prior to the visit. After intercourse, the woman may clean her outer genitalia; however, she should not douche. If there is difficulty timing/having relations as directed, call the office in the morning to make alternative arrangements. |

The doctor or nurse will insert a speculum into the vagina and obtain, in a painless fashion, a sample of cervical mucus that will be viewed under a microscope. The results are available at the time of the visit. In a satisfactory test, we will visualize at least five progressively moving sperm in each microscopic field. In a poor test, we will see no active sperm. In a borderline test, we will observe between 1 and 5 motile sperm per high power microscopic field. |
