The following are instructions for Main Line Fertility patients only, regarding the hysteroscopy. If you have any questions concerning the test, please contact the office.
As with all visits and procedures, be sure you have obtained the appropriate referral/authorization from your insurance company prior to coming to the office.
Please call the office soon after your period has begun to schedule your hysteroscopy for some time between cycle day _____ and _____. |
The hysteroscopy should take approximately five minutes. Often, the doctor will inject a local anesthetic into your cervix prior to beginning the hysteroscopy. In some cases, the doctor will stretch (dilate) the opening of the cervix in order to insert the hysteroscope into the uterus. The hysteroscopy will cause mild to moderate cramping discomfort. |
The doctor will discuss the findings with you on the day of the procedure. In some cases, you will be able to view the inside of your uterus on a television monitor simultaneously as the doctor performs the study. If you like, you may bring a supporting person (spouse, friend) into the room with you. Occasionally, a tissue sample (biopsy) will be obtained during the hysteroscopy. The results of this biopsy will usually be available within a week of the time it has been obtained.
Bring a spouse, relative or friend with you to accompany you home. Do not plan on returning to work or other obligations for the remainder of the day that the hysteroscopy is performed. You should expect to be at full activities on the following day. |
In order to moderate the cramping discomfort associated with this procedure, please take the following medication one hour before the hysteroscopy is scheduled:
Ibuprofen 600 mg
Tylenol - two tablets |
Be sure to call the office (Bryn Mawr 610-527-0800, Paoli 610-992-8200) immediately if you experience symptoms of infection such as severe pain, chills or fever within one week of the procedure. |
