  Patient Instructions for Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)

The following are instructions for Main Line Fertility patients only, regarding the HSG test. If you have any questions concerning the test, please contact the office.

As with all visits and procedures, be sure you have obtained the appropriate referral/authorization from your insurance company prior to coming to the office.

Call the office as soon as your period begins to schedule your x-ray for some time between cycle day _____ and _____. If your period begins at night or on the weekend, please do not call until regular office hours.
Be sure to let us know if you have had previous reactions to x-ray dues or if you are allergic to iodine prior to undergoing the x-ray.
Be sure to obtain the proper referral from your insurance company, if it is required. Without a referral, you may be turned away from the X-Ray Department.
Lankenau Hospital   report to the second floor X-Ray Department 15 minutes before the X-Ray is scheduled.

Bryn Mawr Hospital   report to the information desk at the Warden Lobby (County Line Road entrance) 15 minutes prior to the time the X-Ray is scheduled.

Paoli Hospital   report to the information desk in the lobby 15 minutes before your X-Ray is scheduled.

The test lasts about five minutes. You will experience some cramping as the instruments are placed and the x-ray dye is infused. Usually, the cramping will significantly subside by 45 minutes after the procedure is finished. You may discharge a mixture of x-ray dye, antiseptic solution and minimal blood during the 12-36 hours that follows the procedure.

Most women are able to resume normal activities within one hour of this test. To be on the safe side, we insist that you bring a person with you to drive you home from the hospital and that you refrain from usual activities for the remainder of the day.
Possible complications of the hysterosalpingogram include reaction to x-ray dye and infection. If you notice hives, breathing distress, severe abdominal pain, unusual discharge or fever in the 3-4 days that follow the examination, please contact the office (Bryn Mawr 610-527-0800, Paoli 610-992-8200) immediately.

In order to moderate the cramping discomfort associated with this procedure, please take the following medication one hour before the x-ray is scheduled:

    Ibuprofen 600 mg
    Naproxen sodium (Aleve) 2 tablets
    Tylenol - two tablets
